L’étude s’appuie sur une enquête de terrain réalisée pendant deux ans en immersion dans deux collèges. Elle repose essentiellement sur des entretiens et des observations dans différents lieux scolaires. L’enquête vise à mettre en exergue la pluralité des masculinités pour un même garçon ainsi que la variabilité de leurs mises en œuvre dans le cadre scolaire. Afin d’analyser précisément ces variations, nous proposons une réflexion sur deux cas d’élèves, Mathis et Louis, évoluant dans la même classe de 6ème. S’ils présentent chacun des masculinités très contrastées, nous montrerons que leur variabilité répond à deux logiques différentes selon les contextes. Là où Mathis pratique une variabilité source de marginalisation liée à sa faible capacité à ajuster sa masculinité à ce que ses pairs et ses enseignant·es attendent de lui, Louis parvient mieux à s’adapter aux attendus sociaux et scolaires en s’appuyant opportunément sur la pluralité des dispositions masculines acquises dans diverses sphères de socialisation.
