Abstract
Using the removal of the statue of Edward Cornwallis by the Halifax Regional Municipality in 2018 as its starting point, this chapter highlights the long shadow of British colonization in Atlantic Canada. The statue was removed in response to calls from the indigenous Mi’kmaw community in the context of the publication of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Final Report on the impact of residential schools on indigenous communities. The chapter highlights the need for a reappraisal of British colonization in the region in response to the calls to action in the TRC Final Report and recent developments in the broader study of settler colonialism.
