Couronnée par le Prix Honoré Chavée 2021, la Grande grammaire historique du français (GGHF) est le fruit d'une collaboration entre 34 spécialistes, non seulement français, mais encore allemands, belges, britanniques, canadiens, espagnols, hollandais.L'un des contributeurs, l'éminent romaniste Peter Koch, professeur à l'Université de Tübingen, décédé en 2014, est aussi le dédicataire de l'ouvrage.Avant tout, il convient de saluer la parution de cette synthèse impressionnante, qui fait souffler sur l'histoire de la langue française un grand courant d'air frais.Par la diversité de la matière dont elle traite, la place qu'y tiennent les corpus, la richesse des illustrations qu'elle apporte, la GGHF se présente d'emblée comme une ressource de premier plan.Elle sera utile à toute personne (enseignant, chercheur, étudiant, journaliste, simple curieux…) qui désire s'informer sur la langue française, ses origines, son évolution, sa longue tradition écritemais aussi sur ses variétés, les influences qu'elle a subies, sa diffusion géographique, les autres langues avec lesquelles elle est en contact, les genres textuels à travers lesquels elle est transmise, les instances de politique linguistique qui en orientent l'usage, son apprentissage, son équipement, etc. (Les chapitres 7-10 de la partie 2 « Histoire externe », signés par G. Siouffi, ainsi que les chapitres 48 et 50 sur la dérivation lexicale (D.Amiot) et les emprunts (E.Winter-Froemel), rendront à coup sûr de grands services aux enseignants de français moderne, de FLE, d'histoire de la francophonie.)1.
