Cet article porte sur la récupération politique de l’opéra Turandot (1926) du compositeur Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) dans la propagande du régime fasciste de Benito Mussolini (1883-1945). Il porte sur la réappropriation du génie et du mythe entourant Puccini à la suite de son décès en 1924. Cette récupération politique et idéologique atteint son paroxysme plus particulièrement autour de la création de Turandot en avril 1926. Ce texte expose par ailleurs une observation des différentes caractéristiques de l’oeuvre qui ont pu signifier une certaine comparaison avec le régime mussolinien.Il s’agit d’un premier article scientifique qui repose sur l’étude de la presse italienne et des revues culturelles de l’époque afin d’analyser la manipulation du discours entourant la figure de Puccini et l’exploitation de son statut de compositeur national dans le but de l’héroïser selon les idéaux fascistes.Ultimement, le cas de l’opéra Turandot de Puccini expose et exacerbe la dichotomie entre tradition et modernité présente dans la propagande culturelle fasciste. Il démontre en outre comment la récupération idéologique de Puccini a ainsi favorisé un consensus populaire et une consolidation identitaire permettant de légitimer le pouvoir mussolinien. Dans un dernier ordre d’idées, la réception entourant la création de Turandot est une exemplification des effets de la rhétorique et des mécanismes culturels d’une hégémonie totalitaire dans la vie musicale d’une nation.
