Abstract
Établi en décembre 1905, le Ch’ŏndogyo (Enseignement de la Voie Céleste) est une continuation et une modernisation du mouvement Tonghak (Savoir oriental). Son Pyŏng-hŭi, le patriarche du Tonghak, renomma et réorganisa sa religion afin de resserrer son autorité sur le mouvement après plusieurs années d’absence de la Corée. L’essentiel de cette réorganisation initiale du Ch’ŏndogyo se produisit pendant les années menant à l’annexion japonaise de la Corée en août 1910, une période de bouleversements sociaux, économiques et politiques. Le Ch’ŏndogyo devait assurer sa continuité avec le Tonghak tout en créant une nouvelle identité pour l’ère moderne. La réponse du Ch’ŏndogyo consista à maintenir la conception du Tonghak comme religion « orientale » en harmonie avec les Trois Enseignements (bouddhisme, confucianisme et taoïsme), tout en soulignant un contraste net avec le christianisme venu d’Occident. Toutefois, le Ch’ŏndogyo se présentait aussi comme une sorte de mise à jour de la tradition, ouverte à la modernité, la technologie et aux nouveaux courants éducatifs. En se voulant une religion nationale et nationaliste, il dépassa les Trois Enseignements et devint un mouvement spécifiquement coréen, adapté aux évolutions profondes que subissait la péninsule coréenne. Le Ch’ŏndogyo devint ainsi un nouvel acteur dynamique au sein de la pluralité religieuse coréenne.
