LAY SUMMARY Life threatening trauma and severe hemorrhage are treated using several medical principles called damage control resuscitation (DCR). Red blood cell transfusion is an essential tool in DCR and is used to address a lack of oxygen delivery to the tissues and consequent abnormalities in human physiology. There are numerous challenges to accessing stable red blood cell products in austere and remote environments. This article discusses recent innovations in red blood cell products that improve stability and function in such environments.
