Les cartes anciennes peuvent servir de documents sources pour décrire et décoder l’espace géographique, dans la mesure où elles comportent des éléments utiles pour comprendre la formation et l’évolution d’un territoire. L’objectif principal de cette étude était de produire une visualisation spatiale du territoire de Catu compatible avec un environnement computationnel en relevant les éléments cartographiés (données géospatiales, géohistoriques et toponymiques) dans la Planta Topographica de la paroisse et municipalité de Santa Anna do Catu, dans la région d’Alagoinhas, au Brésil. Ce « plan topographique », daté de 1888, est le principal document sur lequel s’appuie notre recherche. Les éléments illustrés sur cette carte d’époque ont été comparés aux données géographiques de la cartographie officielle du Brésil. La comparaison de cartes provenant de périodes différentes s’avère être une méthode très utile pour étudier la dynamique territoriale. Mais pour ce faire, afin de reconstruire et de corriger les erreurs dans la représentation cartographique des éléments à analyser, il faut d’abord créer des entrepôts de données en formats matriciel et vectoriel. Le géoréférencement de la Planta a été réalisé au moyen d’un logiciel SIG, dans le but de conserver, aussi rigoureusement que possible, la forme des caractéristiques géographiques illustrées. La toponymie employée sur ce document est relativement dense. Elle révèle une forte présence des cultures portugaise et autochtone qui caractérisent, encore aujourd’hui, l’identité du territoire de Catu.
