Chinese Transnational Student Mobilities and Experiences in Canada

Abstract
Canada’s international student (IS) population has grown exponentially over the last two decades. Asian students account for the largest share with over 28% from China. IS mobility (ISM) literature conveys this group as archetypal trans-migrants, drawing the attention of scholars and policymakers because of their increasingly important role in the education, migration and citizenship nexus. Despite the changing gender composition of this group and increases in women ISs, little attention is paid to the gendered narratives of student-migrants. We draw on 15 in-depth semi-structured interviews and employ feminist narrative analysis to show how gender becomes visible, undeniable and inevitable when women student-migrants enter conventional gendered arrangements, specifically, marriage and motherhood. We present rich vignettes from Chinese female ISs who have applied or are in the process of applying for permanent residence in Canada and who describe the gendered challenges of juggling their multiple and competing identities as students, workers, wives, mothers and newcomers.
