 Rumah merupakan salah satu kebutuhan pokok manusia yang berfungsi sebagai tempat tinggal dan tempat berlindung dari acaman luar. Kebutuhan akan rumah atau hunian semakin meningkat sejalan dengan bertambahnya jumlah penduduk. Purwokerto merupakan kota dengan perkembangan penduduk yang cukup tinggi hal ini berpengaruh terhadap jumlah kebutuhan hunian dan semakin sedikitnya lahan yang dapat dimanfaatkan. Untuk menjawab masalah ini, rumah susun dapat menjadi solusi dari minimnya lahan yang tersedia. Di Lain pihak, Rumah susun adalah bangunan gedung yang identik dengan kesan sangat privat dan bertolak belakang dengan pola pikir orang Jawa, terutama di Purwokerto dan sekitarnya, yang masih memiliki jiwa komunal yang tinggi. Diperlukan pengembangan konsep permukiman komunal yang konvensional dalam desain rumah susun. Tulisan ini diharapkan dapat sedikit mencocokkan jiwa komunal itu ke dalam sebuah gedung rumah susun.
