Abstract
Abstract Vetera is the ancient name of Roman legionary fortresses near the village of Birten, to the south of Xanten, on the Rhine in Germany. Vetera I is the site of a group of successive double fortresses (for two legions) from Augustan times until 70 ce , built first in earth and timber and then ca. 60 ce in stone. It was replaced by Vetera II, a single legion fortress further east, now lost to erosion by the Rhine.
