Abstract
Herodotus says that in 525 BC. AD, the Persians, when they had just got their hands on Egypt, had for project to continue their conquest in the direction of Carthage and the West (3.19). Who is preventing them? Their Phoenician subjects and allies, who have a sea power indispensable to the Persians, and who themselves founded Carthage. The Persians then modify their plans and decide to confront the Greeks. This is the story of a fundamental and little-known geopolitical rupture and the authors of which would be, according to Herodotus, the Phoenicians. What if the Persians had conquered Carthage and the West?
