Cet article examine la représentation filmique de la Tchoukotka et de ses habitants depuis les premiers temps de l’image animée jusqu’aux films diffusés sur Internet. Ce siècle d’images filmiques de la Tchoukotka peut être divisé en trois grands moments. Le premier est celui du début du cinéma muet, où la Tchoukotka attire des opérateurs de divers horizons à la recherche d’images spectaculaires d’un bout du monde et de ses habitants « exotiques ». À partir de l’avènement du pouvoir bolchevique, et plus particulièrement de la période stalinienne, se met en place un répertoire de motifs globalement homogènes autour de la mise en scène de la libération des Tchouktches par le pouvoir. Le dernier moment, celui d’un cinéma autochtone de Tchoukotka, commence dans les années 1970 par le passage de l’écrivain tchouktche Iouri Rytkhéou au scénario, donnant naissance à un cinéma sibérien qui s’épanouira véritablement dans la période postsoviétique. Cette analyse sur le long terme permet de mettre au jour les ruptures et les continuités dans le régime de représentation, c’est-à-dire le répertoire d’images qui interagissent entre elles à un moment historique donné, de la Tchoukotka à l’écran. Elle permet également d’interroger dans sa complexité le long moment soviétique qui constitue une période où les Autochtones de Tchoukotka, souvent génériquement présentés comme Tchouktches, sont particulièrement présents sur les écrans et où, grâce à la politique soviétique de promotion des minorités, permet à l’un de ses représentant de passer derrière la caméra.
