Los camélidos sudamericanos cumplieron funciones importantes dentro del imperio Inca. Además de proveer productos primarios, como la carne y el cuero, también fueron fuentes importantes de fibra, combustible y guano, mientras que las llamas fueron a su vez valoradas como bestias de carga. Los reportes etnohistóricos también indican que, con ocasión de las festividades rituales celebradas por el estado, los camélidos machos jóvenes fueron sacrificados en centenares. Los mismos reportes aseguran que algunos de los animales sacrificados fueron completamente quemados y sus cenizas arrojadas al río en un acto ritual, mientras que otros fueron distribuidos y consumidos durante las mismas celebraciones públicas. Una reciente investigación arqueológica efectuada en el centro provincial Inca de Tambo Viejo del valle de Acarí resultó en el hallazgo de una excelente colección de huesos de camélidos; su análisis demuestra que los huesos y sus respectivas epífisis estaban por fusionarse o se habían apenas fusionado, lo que indica que los camélidos sacrificados en Tambo Viejo eran animales físicamente desarrollados.
