L’axiologie de la consommation inventée par Jean-Marie Floch est devenue un incontournable du marketing. Cependant, parmi ses quatre types de valorisation, celui que désigne le terme « critique » prête encore à confusion et reste compris par beaucoup comme exclusivement attaché à la valeur économique et au rapport qualité / prix des produits. Un examen attentif des explications données par Floch sur la construction de son modèle en général et sur la position critique en particulier montre le caractère exagérément réducteur de cette interprétation. La valeur critique d’un produit peut également tenir à sa technicité, à son caractère d’objet bien conçu et bien fait, à l’ingéniosité ou à l’astuce qu’on y décèle, et in fine à l’étonnement admiratif qu’il déclenche. D’une part, c’est au personnage d’Ulysse, incarnation parfaite de la métis des Grecs anciens, que Floch renvoie pour illustrer cette position et expliquer qu’elle déborde largement la seule question du calcul rationnel pour s’étendre jusqu’à une composante émotionnelle. D’autre part, le constat que la relation entre les termes primitifs du carré et son homologue entre leurs subcontraires sont toutes deux hétérodoxes (du fait de la « mise en contrariété » des premiers, en principe complémentaires, par transformation arbitraire d’une implication en une présupposition réciproque), amène à considérer que la valeur critique n’est pas entièrement étrangère à la valeur ludique et à ses ramifications esthétiques. Enfin, c’est du concept d’efficience qu’on peut rapprocher la valorisation critique, en ce qu’elle est en relation d’implication avec la valeur pratique, attachée, elle, à celui d’efficacité.
