Abstract
True occupational exposures must have arrived by the time of the Stone Age – the knapping of flints resulting in silica exposure. The task of providing occupational health services for all workers is still an unattained ideal, even in developed countries. Accidental injuries at work are common, but the precise numbers are unclear as under reporting is also common, especially in low-and middle-income countries and in the informal economy. Occupational ill-health rates are imprecise in most of the world partly because the work-relatedness of these maladies is unrecognised not reported, because of more urgent demands on clinicians. The key criteria for diagnosing an occupational disease are: clinical effects that fit those known to be associated with the agent.
