Abstract
Entre 1722 et 1763, Jean-Philippe Rameau produit un grand nombre de textes théoriques de statuts très divers. Les fondements de son système apparaissent d’une remarquable stabilité mais les justifications qu’il trouve à sa théorie évoluent durant ces quatre décennies. Rameau reste soucieux de se fonder sur une approche mathématique, puis physique du son. Les métaphores genrées se font cependant de plus en plus présentes dans ses textes, pour occuper dans ses derniers ouvrages une place non négligeable.Si l’on étudie ce « sexage » (assignation d’un sexe) ramiste des éléments musicaux (mélodie, cadences, modes, degrés, modulations, mais également la construction du genre de l’analyse et de l’analyste abstrait qui la produit), on constate un mélange d’éléments non marqués et d’autres dont le sexage est souvent sous-entendu mais réel. Fondée sur une valence différentielle des éléments de la musique, regroupés en couples inégalitaires (majeur/mineur, dominante/sous-dominante, dièse/bémol, accord de septième de dominante/accord de sixte ajoutée, cadence parfaite/cadence irrégulière, etc.), la théorie de Rameau annonce et prépare les métaphores genrées essentialisantes du xixe siècle.
