Abstract
Le cinéma fantastique connaît son premier âge d’or au début des années trente avec les productions du studio Universal et le talent de réalisateurs comme Tod Browning, James Whale (Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, The Invisible Man), Karl Freund (The Mummy, Mad Love), Erle C. Kenton (Island of Lost Souls), mais aussi celles des studios RKO (King Kong, Ernest Schoedsack et Meriam C. Cooper), Warner Bros (The Mystery of the Wax Museum, Michael Curtiz), Paramount (Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Rouben Mamoulian), et MGM (Freaks, Tod Browning). Ces films jouent sur l’exotisme presque systématique des décors, sur la monstration spectaculaire des figures, mais parfois aussi sur la suggestion d’une présence. Ils mettent en scène la métamorphose du corps, voire tentent de figurer l’invisible.
