Abstract
Another popular author of books for the juvenile was Bessie Marchant (1862–1941). There was some parallel with the novels of Henty, although her leading character was usually a young woman. Her novels were often given as prizes to children for regular Sunday school attendance. A copy of this novel in the author’s collection was awarded to a pupil of Trinity Primitive Methodist Sunday School, Widnes, in 1920. The novels are set in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Canada, as well as non-imperial zones such as Central America and Siberia. Marchant wrote 130 novels that ‘celebrated the capacity of the British or colonial girls to rise to any challenge set before them in rugged environments’ . 1 Marchant also published short stories in publications such as Girls’ Realm . The novels were published in an era (1900–1939) when the idea of female emigration was becoming more accepted, and indeed, seen as a solution to the gender imbalance in the settler societies. They provide, in a sense, a model for imperial feminine citizenship. This extract is taken from Marchant’s novel In the Toils of the Tribesmen: A Story of the Indian Frontier ( 1900). This novel does not have a female heroine as such, but focuses on a missionary family who are working amidst ‘superstition’ and ‘ignorance’. The plot takes place in the Rann of Cutch and opens with a raid by a bold frontier chief who intends to smuggle guns without the knowledge of the Indian government. The father of Coralie becomes aware of arms running and escapes to inform the British authorities. This leaves Coralie Blake to look after the family. She befriends Amrita, an Indian, and shows her the habits of cleanliness. Amrita becomes a rani (Hindu queen). As a result of Coralie’s influence, Amrita’s tribe fight for the British .
