Como parte de la calidad de vida humana, el agua debe definirse como un bien social y no económico, cuya preservación y manejo sustentable debe ser prioridad en las políticas municipales a nivel local y regional, para garantizar su accesibilidad y asequibilidad. En Guatemala, la mayor fuente del agua dulce son los ríos y lagos, en esa línea de pensamiento, la zona de incidencia hidrográfica del Parque Nacional Río Dulce es uno de los últimos bastiones de la biodiversidad de las tierras bajas en el Caribe guatemalteco. Debido a esto, la presente investigación determina la calidad del agua del Río Dulce, usando la metodología del Índice Canadiense CCME, usando como comparador la norma COGUANOR 29001 de agua potable de Guatemala. Para el efecto se establecieron doce estaciones de muestreo a lo largo de las desembocaduras de los principales afluentes del Río Dulce, de forma bimensual durante el periodo comprendido de marzo 2020 a marzo 2021. Se colectaron muestras de agua en las cuales se cuantificó: potencial de hidrógeno, conductividad eléctrica µS/cm, turbiedad NTU, nitratos mg/l, nitritos mg/l y E. Coli NMP. Se concluyó que el agua del Río Dulce según el Índice CCME de forma general se califica como “regular” por lo que no es apta para consumo humano de forma directa, debe pasar por un proceso de potabilización. Lo anterior presuntamente por incumplimiento de las legislaciones ambientales vigentes, entre ellas el Acuerdo gubernativo 236-2006 y el sobreuso de la tierra en el Parque Nacional Río Dulce.
