Le présent article examine le travail de construction de sens de la gestion axée sur les résultats (GAR) par douze directions d’école, au regard de variables sociocognitives et sociologiques (Dulude et Spillane, 2013). Il confirme l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’identification des besoins de réussite et les mesures prises associées aux cibles de réussite dans les écoles résultent de l’influence des variables individuelles (formation reçue, expériences antérieures, motivation, conception de la réussite des élèves et valeurs personnelles) sur la perception des variables contextuelles (clientèle et environnement scolaires). Quant à la dynamique des interactions priorisée par les directions, elle est elle-même influencée par les variables individuelles et contextuelles. Malgré les limites du recours aux entrevues semi-dirigées, l’intégration de ces facteurs cognitifs dans une approche constructiviste permet de saisir la pluralité de sens dans l’application de la GAR et apparaît comme une avenue à privilégier pour analyser la réalité et l’expérience des directions d’école.
