Abstract
‘Less is more’ offers a brief overview of Bishop’s life and reputation as a poet in an aesthetic context of less is more. A number of chief characteristics of her art have been described by contemporary poets such as Robert Lowell, James Merrill, and Seamus Heaney. The history of Bishop's emergence can be described as one of the most celebrated lyric poets in the English-speaking world of the second half of the 20th century, a period that saw an increasing focus on women’s studies and female writers. In light of her bereft homelife, we should remember the importance of geography and travel in Bishop’s imaginative life. This can be seen through three poems associated with Nova Scotia: ‘Sestina’, ‘Filling Station’, and ‘First Death in Nova Scotia’.
