OPTIMIZATION OF ELECTRODES CONFIGURATION IN ELECTROHYDRODYNAMIC (EHD) DRYER

Abstract
Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying is a novel drying technology, suitable for food and non-food materials. Most of the previously published research was conducted using a single needle/wire discharge electrode and a solid metal plate. This research was focused on the optimization of multiple needle discharge electrode using three types of needles and a mesh-type collecting electrode with different open area and wire diameter as an alternative to the solid metal plate. The highest drying rate was observed when using discharge electrode with sharp pins or construction nails and mesh collecting electrode with open area 36 or 73%. The smallest specific energy consumption 600-650 J/g was for discharge electrode with the emitters made from construction nails and 22 cm square spacing between these emitters.
