Drying kinetics of wheat seeds in a microwave assisted hot air dryer

Abstract
The drying kinetics of wheat seeds was studied using a microwave assisted hot air dryer operated at different drying air temperatures (40, 50 and 60C) and at different initial microwave power densities (0.0, 0.5 and 1W/g). A central composite design was used to set the factor combinations. Dried product quality was monitored through color change, seed growth tests such as germination test, germination rate test, seedling length test, seed vigor index test, seedling fresh and dry mass test and it was used to assess the performance of the drying process. Reciprocal regression models were used to analyze the collected drying data. Drying time reduced considerably with increase in microwave power level and air temperature. It was observed that over the range studied, air temperatures and microwave power densities had no negative effect on seed quality parameters. After drying, the germination percentages were at about 90%.
