Abstract
Significance The visit, termed a ‘penitential pilgrimage’ by the Vatican, was designed to deliver an apology for the role of the Catholic Church in the residential school system intended to separate Indigenous children from their cultural heritage. Revelations about the schools have tarnished Canada’s image abroad and caused introspection at home. Impacts High levels of spending on Indigenous priorities will continue so long as the current Liberal government is in office. Indigenous opposition to large resource projects involving hydrocarbons or mining will grow as activism becomes entrenched. More graves will be discovered at former residential schools in coming years, fuelling Indigenous anger at the federal government.
