Abstract
This chapter discusses the evolution of the concept of sustainable development since the industrial era and reached the formulation of 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) in 2015. It defines the eight salient principles of sustainable development and three pillars/types of sustainability: economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social inclusion that carries across all segments of development, from agriculture to urbanization, water accessibility, energy development and use, transportation, and infrastructure. It also touches upon the definition of energy and its classification based on the nature of utilization (primary and secondary resources) and sources (renewable and nonrenewable). The chapter highlights the role of energy in the sustainable development of the economy, society, and environment based on development indicators like per capita electricity consumption, human development index, and energy intensity. Finally, it briefly discusses sustainable development in developed and developing countries: Sweden, Canada, India, and European Green Deal moment and shows the top, medium, and least performers toward SDG and major challenges for the respective UN member countries.
