Abstract

Density is an important parameter in the mining industry. The evaluation of its spatial distribution in a geological setting allows efficient ore extraction and processing. Current methods to measure this parameter have their respective limitations. A portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) instrument is presented as an alternative. Proxy density values can be acquired efficiently since this instrument is already commonly used in the industry for chemical analysis. To evaluate the optimal configuration for the development of a density tool using XRF technologies, a virtual model was built using GEANT4, an atomic physics simulation package developed by CERN. This modelled instrument allows the identification of potential limitations of the instrument. It also allows understanding of atomic interactions at low energy levels. Hence, the GEANT4 model provides us with optimized guidelines for the development of a density tool for mineral exploration.
