Me déshabiller n’a jamais été une tâche facile, roman posthume de Jean Basile écrit quelques années avant sa mort, mais jamais achevé, met en tension certaines des dernières ambitions de l’écrivain. Basile y explore en effet deux champs d’intérêt et de spéculation que sont l’homosexualité et le surnaturel, à travers la juxtaposition de quatre biographies imaginaires de jeunes gays montréalais, évoluant dans une société encore corsetée moralement, entre 1957 et la fin des années 1960. Davantage qu’une fresque historique ou sociale de l’homosexualité, ce texte, initialement intitulé Opus 666, s’avère être avant tout une affaire de « damnation », s’inscrivant de ce fait sur un arrière-plan irrationnel. Chamanisme, alchimie, diabolisme sont quelques-uns des moyens narratifs, poétiques et fantasmatiques déployés ici pour signifier le caractère à la fois d’exception et d’exclusion de l’homosexualité. Il s’agit, pour Basile, d’en passer par un imaginaire occulte et suspect, afin de fournir les signes d’une reconnaissance, si ce n’est même les prémices d’une histoire (celle des diaboliques, des hérétiques et des persécutés), à des sujets eux-mêmes encore trop souvent occultés ou suspectés. En ce sens, Me déshabiller n’a jamais été une tâche facile se fait le lieu d’une véritable politique du surnaturel qui, en empruntant de façon syncrétique sa logique, ses dispositifs et ses symboles aux discours et aux imaginaires tenus en marge des épistémologies de la modernité occidentale, permettrait d’y réinscrire, par la négative, l’homosexualité.
