Abstract
The archaeological excavations of Place Jules-Verne in Marseille, France, at the beginning of the 1990s revealed three ancient sisterships (JV3, JV4 and JV5) abandoned near the shoreline around AD 100. These shipwrecks feature a central cavity, which made them difficult to identify. Medieval sources have now helped us to identify them as hopper barges designed to pickup sludge from the bottom of the harbour and to carry and dump it in another place by means of a ‘door’ we can now reconstruct in the bottom of the barge hull.
