Le livre retrace la trajectoire biographique du gentilhomme génois Federico Fregoso, qui à l’image de sa génération passe de la vie politique et militaire, des cours de la péninsule, à la réflexion religieuse et à l’engagement réformateur à l’intérieur de l’Église. Par sa figure sont mis en relief les contacts spirituels et religieux entre la France et l’Italie dans les décennies qui précédèrent le Concile de Trente, et sous l’influence de la révolte luthérienne. Malgré son titre de cardinal, les positions théologiques et les écrits de Fregoso lui vaudront des accusations d’hérésie de la part des prélats plus conservateurs de la curie romaine.
