Abstract
Longitudinal, paraffi n section of gemma cup of Tetraphis pellucida Hedw. (400 magnifi cation) showing stalked gemmae in diff erent stages of development. Very similar stalked gemmae were found within the gemma cup of the Early Cretaceous (136 Ma) fossil moss Meantoinea alophosioides Bippus, Stockey, Rothwell, Tomescu gen. et sp. nov. from Vancouver Island, Canada. This fossil, the oldest member of the family Polytrichaceae and one of the most completely known pre-Cenozoic mosses is the fi rst record of fossil moss gemma cups and described by Bippus et al. in "Extending the fossil record of Polytrichaceae: Early Cretaceous Meantoinea alophosioides gen. et sp. nov., permineralized gametophytes with gemma cups from Vancouver Island" on pp. 584-597 in this issue. The section (10 m thick) in the cover image was stained using Walker's Sam quadruple stain protocol: Weigert's iron hematoxylin (1% in 10% ethanol), followed by Bismark Brown (1% in 50% ethanol), then phloxine (1% in 95% ethanol) and 1:1 Fast Green-Orange G (saturated in clove oil); slides were mounted using Eukitt (O. Kindler GmbH, Freiburg, Germany). Micrographs were taken using a Nikon Coolpix E8800 digital camera mounted on a Nikon Eclipse E400 compound microscope (Nikon, Melville, NY, USA). Largest gemma in the image is 90 m.
