Abstract
Significance With voting now over, the winner is expected to be Pierre Poilievre, who has built a base on the right of the party. A victory that comes with a decisive margin over centrist Jean Charest would give Poilievre a clear mandate to move the party further to the right before the next election. Impacts While Poilievre will move his party to the right, he will avoid comparisons with Trump Republicans in the United States. The natural resources sector will back Poilievre on the assumption that he will have a different approach to environmental issues. Canada would renew its efforts to build pipelines to the coasts under a Conservative government as it looks to sell gas to Europe. A Poilievre government would work well with the current provincial governments in Ontario and Quebec, particularly on healthcare.
