Abstract
Significance The Queen’s death has brought many Canadian tributes to her personally, not least during the national commemorative ceremony in Ottawa also held on September 19, but in the coming months Canadians may consider the country’s continued relationship with the British monarchy. Impacts Any change to the monarchy’s status will affect Canada’s treaty relationships with Indigenous peoples, which are held by the Crown. A move by Australia or New Zealand to reconsider relations with the Crown would likely cause Canada to consider its own position. Canada’s relations with the United Kingdom will remain unchanged regardless of whether the monarchy is kept or not.
