En abril de 2020, al cerrarse la frontera canadiense debido a la pandemia, los trabajadores migrantes temporales del Programa de Trabajadores Agrícolas Temporales (PTAT), en particular los procedentes de México, fueron declarados “esenciales” y se les permitió entrar en Canadá. Un mes después, a pesar del cierre, en México las maquiladoras de autopartes recibieron la orden del gobierno de reabrir al considerar su trabajo como algo “esencial”. Este artículo aborda ambas situaciones. Metodológicamente, se basa en un seguimiento documental de varias investigaciones etnográficas realizadas en los últimos años con estos trabajadores. Desde la perspectiva de la economía política, se destacarán los vínculos estructurales entre el trabajo estacional en el sector agroalimentario canadiense y el trabajo en las maquiladoras mexicanas con la economía global. A continuación, se procederá a mostrar cómo y para quién este trabajo es realmente esencial, mientras que la precariedad sigue siendo la suerte de los trabajadores de ambos sectores. También se demostrará cómo, en tiempos de pandemia, esta precariedad se exacerba a nivel estructural y se refleja en el deterioro de las condiciones de trabajo y de vida para todos. Este artículo invita, pues, a reconsiderar no el carácter esencial de los trabajadores de estos dos sectores y de muchos otros, sino el uso que se hace del propio término.
