Abstract
This paper re-examines the history of Miletus during the mid-6<sup>th</sup> century BCE. Herodotus’ account tells of a period of decline in Miletus yet also states that it was the only mainland Ionian city to remain independent of Persia after Cyrus’ conquest of Lydia in 546 BCE. This paper argues that the presumed decline of Miletus is a mirage based on post-archaic views of the city. Miletus continued to be prosperous throughout the mid-century and only came under Persian power in the 530s or 520s, after suffering a significant naval defeat at the hands of Polycrates of Samos.
