Abstract
Significance Industrial action is increasing across unionised sectors of the US economy, driven by the impact of inflation on real wages but also by pandemic-related stresses that have left many workplaces understaffed and remaining employees facing longer shifts. Impacts A rail strike would affect cross-border supply chains because of the interlinking connections with Canadian, Mexican and US ports. Industrial action to protest against overworked, understaffed and stressful workplaces is also occurring internationally. The effort to extend unionisation into new areas is having some success but has yet to be tested in major contract negotiations. More than 1,100 Weyerhaeuser timber workers in Oregon and Washington are striking over rising healthcare costs.
