Abstract

 
 
 This paper examines the way that Hobby Lobby and the Museum of the Bible (MOTB) appropriate heritage objects in order to support a deeper religio-political agenda. Despite non-sectarian claims, the MOTB conflates Christianity and nationalism in order to portray an idealized America, one which is united under Evangelical morals and beliefs. Their participation in the looted antiquities trade is a manifestation of neocolonialism which grants them economic, social, and political power. Ultimately, exerting control over these objects enables the MOTB to influence not only visitors to the museum, but the State itself.
