Abstract
This article presents a comparative study of strategic integration of sustainable development within several public and private French firms, between 2001 and 2005. It primarily focuses on the influence of institutional and stakeholder pressures associated with property rights on sustainable behaviors. This study highlights the importance of industry regulation and powerful stakeholders to encourage the sustainable development actions of the companies. This research shows the emergence of strong public/private hybridization. This is most notably observed in an attempt to reconcile stakeholders with a priori contradictory interests (i.e. expected shareholder profit, public service demands, as well as social and environmental responsibility).
