Cet article trace l’histoire des deux premières traductions françaises du roman Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) de Robert Louis Stevenson et fait valoir les raisons historico-littéraires qui font que cette histoire de doubles incontestablement ancrée dans une tradition littéraire écossaise fut en mesure de remplir des rôles très distincts dans l’histoire littéraire française. L’article démontre que la traduction de Jules-Paul Tardivel, publiée au Québec en 1887- 1888, découle d’un débat sur la moralité religieuse à la fin du dix-neuvième siècle, tandis que la traduction de Mme Berthe Lowe, publiée par Plon en 1890, participe à un débat sur la modernité artistique à un moment où le champ littéraire français était en pleine crise esthétique.
