Abstract
En raison des realia qui en apparence émaillent le texte, la tentation est grande pour l’historien d’admettre les Métamorphoses d’Apulée au nombre des sources de l’histoire de l’Empire romain au iie siècle apr. J.‑C. Cependant, ce « roman » en langue latine emprunte sa trame à un ouvrage grec antérieur et Apulée présente lui‑même son œuvre comme une « fable milésienne ». La difficulté à distinguer dans le récit les apports d’Apulée par rapport à l’original, comme la volonté affichée de divertir le lecteur, invitent à considérer avec prudence les éventuelles informations historiques contenues dans l’œuvre. Toutefois, le texte apuléien peut être confirmé au cas par cas par des sources primaires, comme l’illustrent trois exemples, les scènes d’auberge au livre I et deux cas consécutifs d’abus de pouvoir au livre IX.
