Abstract
Le deuxième quart du xixe siècle voit le développement d’une réflexion sur la valeur artistique et la légitimité historique de la romance française, genre vocal de prédilection des salons du temps. Il s’agit de prendre acte du statut exceptionnel de la chanson qui, d’une certaine manière, fonde musicalement l’identité culturelle de notre pays : la France est, par excellence, la patrie de la chanson. La médiocrité du matériau poétique fourni aux compositeurs de romances incite à s’interroger sur les conditions sous lesquelles le genre pourrait retrouver le lustre – largement idéalisé – de notre « chanson éternelle ». Les grands chansonniers du passé, notamment Clément Marot, le poète de François Ier, sont un modèle possible pour les musiciens du xixe siècle, mais c’est le lyrisme d’un Pierre de Ronsard qui s’imposera comme garant de la continuité historique du chant français.
