Abstract
L'auteur, qui est un acteur et un observateur privilégié de l'évolution des vingt-cinq dernières années de la psychiatrie au Québec, retrace dans cet article le développement de cette époque. Il décrit la situation avant 1962, les conséquences de la commission Bédard et l'effet de la commission Castonguay-Nepveu sur les services psychiatriques. Il analyse ensuite le développement de ces services sous les angles d'institutionnalisation-désinstitutionnalisation, de la recherche et de l'approche communautaire. Il questionne ensuite les théories étiologiques, l'approche bio-psychosociale et parle du rôle des malades dans la défense de leurs droits, et des familles. Il termine en formulant certaines propositions susceptibles d'améliorer les services actuels.
