Abstract
Binlerce yıl önce insanlar, nasıl fırın yapacaklarını, kayaçları eritmek için ateşi nasıl kullanacaklarını ve metalleri nasıl üreteceklerini öğrenmelerine rağmen, cevherlerin zenginleştirilmesinde çözeltilerin kullanımı, asit ve bazların öğrenilip kullanıldığı simyacılar dönemine rastlamaktadır. Bununla birlikte modern hidrometalurjinin başlangıcı, iki önemli prosesin keşfedildiği 19. yüzyılın sonlarına dayandırılabilir. Bu prosesler, altın ve gümüşün çözündürülmesi için siyanür liç prosesi ve boksit cevherlerinin değerlendirilmesi için geliştirilen Bayer prosesidir. Daha sonra, 1940’larda, uranyum zenginleştirilmesi ile ilgili olarak Manhattan Projesi (ABD) bir dönüm noktası olmuştur. O tarihten itibaren, hidrometalurji giderek ilerlemekte ve hatta bazı pirometalurjik proseslerin yerini almaktadır.
