Switching models of power-electronic converters offer high accuracy for electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations. However, they require small time-steps which impose a computational burden, especially for the simulation of large systems. Recently, a hybrid parametric average-value/detailed model (HPAVM) has been developed for line-commutated rectifiers which can reconstruct the ac and dc waveforms consistent with the switching models while allowing large time-steps for simulations. In this paper, first, the HPAVM formulation is extended to line-commutated inverters. Thereafter, the numerical performance of the proposed hybrid parametric average-value/detailed modeling technique is investigated on a classic line-commutated-based HVDC system. It is verified that the proposed HPAVM can be superior compared to switching models of HVDC systems by allowing simulations with large time-steps while maintaining acceptable accuracy.
