Abstract
Significance This was the RBA’s fourth rise since January, a record for a single year, and took the official cash (base) rate to 1.85%. It came after inflation surged to 6.1% year-on-year and 1.8% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter, compared to the RBA’s inflation target of 2.0-3.0%. Impacts Weak investment and rising costs will dampen business activity as consumer spending softens. Companies will not be able to cover the loss of domestic income as growth in Australia’s main trading partners is also slowing. A widening budget deficit will hamper the government’s ability to respond to structural economic challenges.
