Au Bronze Récent, la production de parfums et de cosmétiques se développe en une véritable industrie gérée et contrôlée par les palais mycéniens. C’est grâce à cette organisation économique et à la large diffusion de ces produits dans le bassin égéen que de nombreux témoignages tant épigraphiques, qu’archéologiques et iconographiques ont pu être conservés. Outre l’aspect économique, il est également possible de percevoir l’usage des cosmétiques dans des contextes à la fois rituels et funéraires, ce qui souligne ainsi l’intégration de ces produits dans les sociétés minoenne et mycénienne, bien au-delà d’une simple considération d’esthétique corporelle.
