Abstract
The past year reflected the effects of the the COVID-19 pandemic. Striving for the protection of the environment also took place against the backdrop of the declaration of the start of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Ecosystem Restoration on World Environment Day (5 June). The pandemic-driven fears instilled the need for the protection of natural ecosystems and habitats, the lack of which created an ordeal of various pathogens and their multiple variants. Despite the halt to human activity in 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic, scientists from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring (CAM) Service ended the year with an announcement that one of the longest-lived Antarctic ozone holes was finally reaching its closure. It will be recalled that 16 September of every year is observed as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, or World Ozone Day. CAM marked the day this year by announcing that the ‘Southern Hemisphere ozone hole surpasses the size of Antarctica’.
