Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The behaviour of a full scale activated sludge wastewater treatment plant was studied when fed with urban combined sewer influent. Field measurements and simulations with the Activated Sludge Model n°1 (ASM1) were combined. The ASM1 was calibrated at 20°C on a detailed 48-hour dry weather sampling campaign on site. The parameter set was validated on a similar campaign carried out in rain weather one month later. Simulations were then run to study the reaction of the plant facing 24- hour combined influent events, during which it is fed at maximum design flow and with COD and N loads multiplied by a variable coefficient. These simulations showed that the genuine hydraulic shock always caused an increase of the discharged COD load and, in a lower range, of organic N, by a simple flush of soluble organic compounds from the tanks. The readily biodegradable COD brought by rain is treated in real time, while part of the slowly biodegradable COD is stored up in sludge and is removed after dry weather returned. The oxygen demand increase for COD degradation is thus lower than expected, but spreads over several days after the rain event. The oxygen demand increase for nitrification is limited to the duration of the event : as the nitrification capacity is not exceeded, there is no ammonia accumulation in the tanks. The simulations clearly show the influence of the influent COD/N ratio on the total nitrogen removal, as it is a determining factor for assimilation and denitrification. If the overload input is steady, the plant shifts to a new steady state within a day approximately. After the overload stopped, the plant returns to the dry weather steady state within 0.5 to 2 days, depending on the variables and the intensity of the overload.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
