El propósito de este artículo es analizar las redes sociales en el área urbana de Ottawa de un trabajador pobre de origen congoleño. El texto indica la existencia de redes vecinales locales (asociaciones vecinales, iglesias) y redes transnacionales (los negocios empezaron "aquí" para mantener el desarrollo económico y social "allí"). Cada día, sus condiciones de trabajo y vida son presionadas por el mecanismo de subcontratación que le emplea, su inserción en la vida social (la reconstrucción o recomposición de su "familia extendida") y la economía (trabajo, consumo de servicios tales como el teléfono e Internet que son los vehículos de la globalización), una relación mantenida con amigos, primos y sobrinos que viven a lo largo y ancho del mundo y el interés para salvar los aspectos positivos de su cultura sin desafiar el contenido esencial de la cultura de "aquí". Como resultado, él es tanto de "aquí" como de "allí".
