Dans cet article, l’auteur expose le cheminement qui l’a mené d’une « ethnologie de Bailleurs », la tradition ethnologique qui s’est développée dans le cadre colonial dans le souci d’une connaissance de l’altérité maxima, à une « ethnologie de l’ici ». Gérard Althabe présente son expérience de chercheur dans des terrains relevant du présent de la société française. Cette démarche introduit une rupture avec la tradition qui amenait l’ethnologue à choisir ses sujets au plus loin de lui, en se dissociant de son objet d’étude. Au contraire, dans les situations locales et contemporaines, l’implication de l’ethnologue devient elle-même l’instrument de la production de la connaissance, car la place de l’ethnologue dans ses échanges avec les gens est définie de manière particulière dans les diverses situations en fonction de son appartenance sociale. Le chercheur, pris comme témoin, est entraîné dans une perspective particulière et l’interprétation de l’entretien doit investir cette dimension. Cette démarche vise à construire le sens tel qu’il se dégage des échanges, l’événement de rencontre étant l’unité d’interprétation.
