Conformément au programme défini par Max Vernet, consistant à cerner la définition du topos satorien en partie par contraste avec des notions voisines, ma contribution se propose de parcourir le territoire des folkloristes pour une mise au point sur leur travail autour du motif, essentiellement à partir des critiques suscitées par le répertoire de Stith Thompson, le Motif-Index of Folk Literature. Ces critiques et les tentatives de solution qu’elles ont inspirées nous mèneront à prendre en compte la « fonction » et les principes d’analyse du récit proposés par Propp. Les principes sous-jacents aux propositions des deux analystes et les limites qu’on leur reconnaît offrent matière à réflexion pour l’entreprise de SATOR, que ce soit pour les questions de définition et d’identification des topos ou pour les paramètres qui président à l’élaboration d’un thésaurus. C’est dans l’esprit d’en tirer enseignement pour TOPOSATOR qu’il est intéressant d’observer la circularité des efforts de définition du motif depuis les premières remarques portées au travail de Thompson. Mais il faut d’abord dire en quoi le travail accompli par les folkloristes est une référence obligée malgré les failles qui ne manqueront pas d’apparaître. Elle s’impose à trois titres, le premier étant le lien de filiation entre la narratologie et l’analyse du conte populaire. Les écoles d’obédience finnoise avec Aarne et Thompson d’un côté et russe de l’autre avec Propp, ont cherché à rationaliser l’analyse des récits traditionnels et pour cela se sont mises en quête d’unités minimales d’analyse. Bien qu’elles aient abouti à des conclusions différentes, leurs démarches se basent sur le même principe : l’observation des constantes et des récurrences.
